Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May. Emerald stones are often classified as one of the hardest stones in existence, yet their beauty and rarity make them highly sought after. The word "emerald" is derived from the Anglo-Saxon "æmearc," which means "green gem." The tree from which emeralds are formed was also known as the "emerald tree." An emerald should usually have a hardness rating between 6.0 and 7.0 on the gem scale.
